Indiana has a long and rich ballooning tradition.  As a matter of fact, one of the first events ever held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a balloon event.  On June 5, 1909, the Indianapolis Aero Club  held a gas balloon race at the track.  Over the years, there have been several other balloon events held there, as well.

The Indiana Montgolfier Society carries on the tradition of ballooning in Indiana.  The club is named after the Montgolfier brothers, Jacques Etienne and Joseph Michel, who in 1783, demonstrated the first hot air balloon in Paris, France.

Several currently active balloonists in the state got their start in the 1970s and 80s, when ballooning experienced a tremendous growth in popularity.
